DEPARMENT SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

2023-24

On 3rd September 2023, Dr. Meena Patangay, Dean Admin and HOD of the Department of Nutrition, conducted a community outreach activity in collaboration with Bhavsar Vision India. As part of this event, blood glucose monitoring and diet counseling were offered to the general public, with nearly 100 people being screened. 

World Diabetes Day Awareness Programs

In line with the commitment to public health and social responsibility, the Department of Nutrition at St. Anns has consistently organized awareness programs, particularly focusing on diabetes awareness. In November 2023, marking World Diabetes Day celebrated on 14th November, MSC I & II Year and PG Diploma students conducted 15 outreach activities. These activities aimed at educating diverse communities, including schools, colleges, old age homes, community parks, and government institutions, about diabetes prevention and management.

 Nutrition Awareness Programs with GMR Varalakshmi Foundation

In collaboration with GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, the Department of Nutrition conducted various nutrition awareness programs in different villages around Shamshabad during 2023-24. On 10th and 11th August 2023, Ms. Phani Kumari and NCB final year students organized an awareness program on breastfeeding, emphasizing the theme “Let’s make breastfeeding and work, work!” to support working women.

 Nutritional Needs of Pregnant and Lactating Mothers

On 13th September 2023, under the guidance of Ms. Hannah Jessie Francis, MSc II Year students organized a program focusing on the nutritional needs of pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as proper weaning practices.

 Adolescent Health Awareness Program

On 14th September 2023, Dr. Khushboo Vyas and Dr. Parul Choudhary coordinated a program on “Adolescent Health,” addressing the unique health and nutrition needs of adolescents.

 Anaemia Mitigation Program

On 8th January 2024, Dr. Meena Patangay and Ms. Hannah Jessie Francis led an Anaemia Mitigation program for adolescent girls at Govt. Girls High School in Shamshabad, providing a one-hour awareness session.

Nutrition Education Program (NEP)

Undergraduate students conducted 24 sessions aimed at enlightening diverse demographic segments about the significance of nutrition in fostering overall health and well-being.

 

2022-23

 Diabetes Screening and Awareness Program

The Department of Nutrition at St. Ann’s is committed to public health, with a focus on spreading awareness and promoting well-being. In alignment with this mission, the department conducts various awareness programs annually in honor of World Diabetes Day, celebrated on the 14th of November.

– MSC and Diploma students organized 12 Diabetes screening and Awareness programs, educating participants about diabetes and providing screening sessions.

– Handouts in Telugu, Hindi, and Urdu were distributed to enhance understanding.

– Beneficiaries reported being inspired to adopt healthier lifestyles and steer clear of detrimental habits.

Outreach Activity in Collaboration with GMR, Varalakshmi Foundation

As part of the department’s social responsibility, the Department of Nutrition, in collaboration with GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, conducts nutrition awareness programs in villages around Shamshabad.

– Conducted an awareness program on breastfeeding’s significance for pregnant and lactating mothers on 4th and 8th August 2022, commemorating World Breastfeeding Week.

– During National Nutrition Month 2022, BSC III-year students conducted a nutrition awareness program on nutritional requirements in pregnancy, lactation, and complementary feeding at Ranganayakulu Colony, Shamshabad.

– In observance of World Diabetes Day 2022, MSC II-year students, along with Mrs. Urooja Birjis and Dr. Khushboo from the Department of Nutrition, conducted a nutrition awareness program and diabetes screening camp at Ranganayakulu Colony, Shamshabad on 24th November 2022.

– Mrs. Hannah Jessie and B.Sc III-year NCB & NCZ 15 students visited GMR Foundation as part of NEP Program and International Year of Millets on 13.3.2023, where they prepared and demonstrated various millet-based recipes for Pregnant & Lactating mothers.

Nutrition Education Program (NEP) on Awareness of Millets

 In line with our departmental social responsibility, we actively engage in Nutrition Education Programs (NEP). The year 2023 has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of Millets. Our final-year students have taken up the mantle to raise awareness about millets among children, young adults, adolescents, and adults.

A total of 21 programs were conducted at various locations in Hyderabad.

2021-22

Diabetes Awareness Drive 2022

– Aimed to spread awareness about diabetes prevention and management.

– Included workshops, free check-ups, and informative sessions for the community.

Nutribag Campaign

– Promoted healthy eating habits by distributing specially curated nutribags containing nutritious essentials.

– Focused on improving dietary choices for better well-being.

World Heart Day 2021 – Fitness Session for Faculty

– Organized an invigorating fitness session for faculty members to emphasize cardiovascular health.

– Encouraged regular exercise as a key to a healthy heart.

Nutrition Awareness Programmes 2021-22

– Conducted a series of programs highlighting the significance of balanced nutrition.

– Addressed the importance of a well-rounded diet in maintaining overall health.

Hypertension Awareness Month – May 2022

– Dedicated the month to raising awareness about hypertension and its prevention.

– Provided educational resources and organized screenings for early detection.

2020-21

Outreach Programs for National Nutrition Month and Nutrition Awareness (June 2020)

The department’s outreach initiatives during National Nutrition Month and the nutrition awareness programs executed by the outgoing batch in June 2020 have been instrumental in fulfilling our Departmental Social Responsibility.

Grow Your Veggies Champaign 

As part of National Nutrition Month, the Department initiated a “Grow Your Veggies Challenge” aimed at enlightening individuals about cultivating their own greens within the confines of their homes.

Faculty Contribution for COVID-19 Relief

In a concerted effort to alleviate the hardships brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, all faculty members generously contributed 25% of their salaries for the months of April and May. This collective effort was directed towards providing relief packages to the underprivileged and those severely affected by the pandemic.

2019-20

Student Social Responsibility Awareness Programme (December 2019)

In an initiative to instill a sense of social responsibility, the Department of Business Management organized a one-day programme under the theme of “Happiness.” Final year graduate students of Nutrition actively participated in this event, which took place on December 4, 2019, at St. Joseph’s Auditorium, St. Ann’s College for Women. The event witnessed the enthusiastic involvement of students from Bojagutta Govt. School. Dr. Meena Kumari and Mrs. Phani Kumari from the Department of Nutrition led the programme.

Diabetes Awareness Camp (January 2020)

Final year students from the NCZ stream took charge of a Diabetes Awareness Camp on January 25, 2020. This camp, held at a community walker’s park near the college, offered blood glucose level testing and presented diabetes-friendly food recipes as samples. Participants also received valuable counseling on diabetes management.

Diabetes Awareness Walk and Talks (November 2019)

The first-year MSC students organized a Diabetes Awareness Walk on November 16, 2019, held in the public garden. The event featured a talk by a Diabetologist and a nutrition presentation led by Dr. Meena Kumari. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about diabetes and promote healthy lifestyle choices among the community.

These activities reflect our ongoing commitment to student-driven social responsibility and the promotion of community health and well-being.

2018-19

Nutrition Education programs during:

a) World Breastfeeding Awareness week

World Breastfeeding Awareness week  is celebrated globally from 1st -7 th August. The theme for 2018 World Breastfeeding Week(WBW) is Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life. To commemorate the same, the students of Pg Diploma Nutrition & Dietetics and UG final year students conducted Breastfeeding awareness programs at 11 different venues.b) As a part of curriculum, NEPs were conducted by B.Sc.Final year students

b) Nutrition awareness programs

Nutrition awareness programmes (10)  were conducted by the students of NCB & NCZ III Year at various schools and colleges.

C) Anaemia Awareness program at GMR

Final year NCZ students along with Mrs Phani Kumari organized Anaemia Awareness program where they conducted anemia checkup for women working in centers at GMR, Shamshabad on 22-02-19.

PG Diploma students along with Mrs. Urooja Birjis went to Zilla Parishad School GMR, Shamshabad. They conducted Anaemia screening & awareness programme, anemia check up and counseling for school children of 8th and 9th standard on 26-02-19.
