About DBT STAR college scheme
Department of Biotechnology initiated Star College Scheme in the year 2008 to strengthen the Universities and Colleges offering Undergraduate education. It is a prestigious scheme which emphasizes holistic improvement of science education at undergraduate level with special emphasis on practical training to students across the country. DBT will identify colleges with ambition and potential for excellence and help them in achieving excellence in teaching by providing academic and physical infrastructure.
DBT Star College Scheme at St. Ann’s College for Women:
The college was sanctioned with DBT Star college Scheme in the year 2020 in which four science departments were recommended by the Sixth Task force Meeting for financial support. The college was funded with a total grant of 44 lakhs for strengthening four Undergraduate departments of Zoology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology.

Objectives
- To enhance the quality of the learning and teaching process to stimulate original thinking through hands on exposure to experimental work by participation in in-house projects, summer training and experiential learning through field visits to industries.
- Seek guidance from R&D organizations to provide access and exposure to students to specialized infrastructure and encourage participation in science exhibitions etc.
- To promote networking and strengthen ties with neighboring institutions and other laboratories through collaborative research projects.
- Conducting awareness programs on the theme ―”happy living in a healthy environment” in less privileged neighboring communities/ institutions.
- To increase capabilities of core instrumentation resources by procuring new equipment and upgrading of existing facilities.

QUALITATIVE IMPROVEMENTS
2020-21
- A 2-day webinar was organized by DBT Star College Departments entitled-“Frontiers in Biosciences.”
- Training of trainers ToT- National level e-workshop (5 weekend sessions) on Bioinformatics was organized in collaboration with Triton Biosolutions and WE HUB, Hyderabad.
- Digitization of museum by Dept. of Zoology.
- Field visit to Zoological survey of India was undertaken.
- Outreach activity on Women Health and Hygiene was organized by Dept. of Zoology.
2021-22
- A Virtual Lab –DIZA (Digital Innovations in Zoology @ Ann’s) was established by the Department of Zoology.
- The Department of Zoology is pioneer in setting up a Virtual Lab in the State of Telangana.
- Release of Zoology practical e- manual & paper back manual for semester-1 & semester-2
- Field visit to Zoological Survey of India was organised for students.
- Two-days National e-workshop on Virtual dissection in collaboration with IIT-Kharagpur was organized by Dept. of Zoology
- Supplementary equipments were bought leading to up-gradation of lab equipments. Additional experiments were conducted for benefit of students.
- A two-day hands-on –training offline program was organized by Dept II at the intercollegiate level in collaboration with Variant Genetics, Pvt Ltd., Hyderabad.
- Outreach activities were organized on National Science Day and on Menstrual Hygiene.
