The Dept of English believes that “An individual’s whole experience is built upon the plan of his language”. So it is our earnest endeavour to enable the students to comprehend the scope and power of the English language and appreciate the aesthetics of literature.
The Department of English at St. Ann’s College for women commenced in 1983, with English as a Second language and English Literature course as an optional among the three majors for a degree in BA, under the headship of Mrs. Girija Murthy who was the only faculty member for student strength of 60. Today we are a team of ten members in the Dept and reach out to the entire college, with around 2500 undergraduate students of the first, second and final year. The dept offers Literature as an optional to the students of BA. A course on Soft Skills for PG sections is also offered.
Our objective is to enhance the learners linguistic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing at the basic level and improving their proficiency at the advanced level, to give them an awareness of the opportunities available in the English language market and to make them savor the diversity and energy of the current renaissance in literary studies.
The Dept arranges extension lectures, workshops, seminars and panel discussions to give the students an exposure to the latest trends in the field. The Dept has a well equipped Language lab and a digital library with soft solutions to enhance their language competence.
The annual literary day is a regular and much awaited feature of the college. A host of competitions like essay writing, elocution, debating, quizzes are held to provide opportunities for the talented students.
